L-3 Marine Systems International (L-3 MSI) announced that it has been awarded a contract to provide its latest NACOS Platinum series aboard two new 150,000-gross-ton cruise ships for Star Cruises. Built by MEYER WERFT at its Papenburg shipyard in northern Germany, the 335-meter-long vessels are due to be delivered in 2016 and 2017.
– We are extremely proud to once again be selected to supply Star Cruises with state-of-the-art maritime technology, as well as our NACOS integrated navigation equipment, which is already in service aboard a number of other Star Cruises vessels, said Maik Stoevhase, senior vice president of L-3 MSI’s Automation, Navigation and Communication business.
L-3 SAM Electronics’ NACOS Platinum navigation system comprises five X- and S-band radars linked via Ethernet to 10 Multipilot multifunction workstations for combined displays of ARPA radar, ECDIS conning and dynamic positioning operations, as well as those for automatic steering and voyage planning. The scope of supply is completed by subsidiary sensors consisting of AIS, DGPS, Doppler logs, echosounders, and indicator and wind/weather navigation aids.
L-3’s NACOS Platinum series is complemented by an advanced dynamic positioning system with three polar axis joystick controllers and one CP1 DP controller, in addition to special cruise software developed by L-3 Dynamic Positioning & Control Systems. Integrated DP functionality will be available at three Multipilot workstations for the main operator console and both bridge wings through a user-friendly touch-screen interface.
Also associated with NACOS Platinum is L-3 Valmarine’s VALMATIC Platinum Integrated Automation System (IAS), which includes a Machinery System, Power Management and HVAC Systems, a Safety Management System (SMS) and Emergency Shutdown (ESD) System, as well as an Information Management System (IMS). Covering more than 40,000 I/O signals for each ship, these systems are fully integrated via a redundant system network. VALMATIC Platinum has a multifunctional and user-friendly operator interface where process-related information is instantly available.
