The Clean Ship Award honors the shipowner and the ship that has contributed to the greatest reduction of emissions to air or discharges to sea in relation to its function and operation.
The nominees are:
• Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. for the “Allure of the Seas”
This ship is the world’s largest cruise ship, and it has an environmental impact per person onboard that is astoundingly small compared to any other passenger ship.
• Vale S.A. for the “Vale Brasil”
The “Vale Brasil” is an ore carrier expected to set a new standard for long-distance dry bulk carriers and with low emissions per ton of cargo carried.
• Stena Lines for the “Stena Hollandica”
This combined freight and passenger ferry built in line with the Stena Energy Saving Programme has led to a significant environmental improvement per lane meter.
• NITC and Oman Shipping Company for the “Sifa”
This is the first VLCC in a series of ships that enters into service with an installed Ballast Water Treatment plant, well before the mandatory date and leading the way for others.
The Next Generation Ship Award recognizes the yard, designer or owner with the most promising design idea for a ship that will be at sea in the coming decade, demonstrating the greatest advances to further the development of shipping.
The nominees are:
• STX Europe, Rauma Yard and the South African Department of Environmental Affairs for “NB 1369”
To date there is no unified mandatory policy for vessels operating in the polar region. This supply and research vessel will set a new passenger ship standard for such vessels.
• Seaspan Ship Management for the “SAVER 10,000”
Container ships typically operate at rather high speeds. This container ship will show the way for the future development of container transport using a more moderate speed and with significant fuel and environmental savings.
• Huisman Equipment BV for the “Wind Turbine Shuttle”
Vessels for wind farms are a very new shipping segment. The “Wind Turbine Shuttle” is a new concept, both with respect to vessel type and the way the cargo is carried. The ship will carry wind turbine foundations in a vertical position to ease installation offshore.
• Rolls-Royce Marine AS for the “Environship Concept”
The short sea shipping fleet is aging and in need of renewal. “The Environship Concept” is a general cargo ship optimized to carry a combination of cargo typical for short sea shipping in Northern Europe. With LNG fuel and a dedicated design for short sea shipping, the emissions from this shipping segment can be significantly reduced.
An independent jury is responsible for the selection of nominees. It includes representatives from Det Norske Veritas, Maritim 21, Marintek, Nor-Shipping and Riviera Maritime Media (for the Clean Ship Award) and Fairplay Solutions (for the Next Generation Ship Award).
Tollef Schiander, Director of Nor-Shipping, says, “The Nor-Shipping Awards nominees are truly inspiring. We hope that increasing the visibility of such innovative work will encourage others in the industry to follow their lead or to discover even better solutions.”
