Calling All Mariners: Ausmarine Opens Tuesday

While the exhibition, which runs for three days, until Thursday, November 25, has a large range of exhibits to interest commercial and government mariners of all kinds, there are two important and thought provoking seminars. Both invite serious industry participants without charge.
Anyone participating in either or both seminars is almost certain to learn much of interest and value and to make some useful contacts.

“Australia and the Indian Ocean: Great Opportunities, Big Challenges”
Tuesday, November 23, from 0845 to 1300hrs. Venue: PCEC Meeting Room 7, Level 2.
The seminar is hosted by the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS) at the University of
Wollongong. It is convened by Professor Sam Bateman, Professorial Research Fellow at ANCORS and co-author of the recent
report “Our western front – Australia and the Indian Ocean” for the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI).
Australia should be giving greater attention to the Indian Ocean. Australia is a major stakeholder in this ocean, including its
security and stability. The country has a larger area of maritime jurisdiction in the ocean than any other Indian Ocean
country. Australia’s greatest challenges, and perhaps also opportunities, concerning border security, offshore sovereignty and sovereign rights are in the
Indian Ocean.
